From Volcanos to Rain Forests… Lions & Tigers & Bears OH MY … Lions & Tigers & Bears OH MY… Hold on! Wait a Minute! Let me put some LOVE in it!
Day 2 – Travel day
So you all know there is going to be a TRAVEL DAY in between each destination… think of it like “foreplay”, that was the best description I could come up with that would slide… (hehehe!) What? I am being totally honest here…
Maes, Ticos y Ticas
630am… Wake up Call, yeah that’s right, 630 am…I jump out of bed and pull back the curtains… and WHAT DO I SEE? … yup that’s right, heavy fog and yee old faithful RAIN! (sigh), Oh well, you know what they say? (stand by for cliché) “If you love rainbows you gotta have rain”.
After a hearty home-made breakfast, our Costan Rican Trail hermanos pick us up in our Handy-Dandy Tour bus and off we go to San Jose to their HQ to meet the rest of the team who made this trip possible… and what a lovely crew they are!!!! We are also picking up the owner/founder of Costan Rican Trails.. Whilem Von Breyman. A 6ft2, devilishly handsome gentleman… re-named *Our Fearless Leader* He will be joining us for 48 hours…
Onward to the Tropical Rain Forest we go. Next stop, *Turrialba* deep inland. As we drive past all these villages that are clearly living off the lay of the land, farming, eco-living, self-sustainable…It’s pretty amazing to see. I am scratching my head and trying to figure out the following… after the 1991 Earthquake the President, José Maria Figueres Olsen decreed that he was suspending the railway (due to safety and because it was too expensive to repair the damaged areas) and approved the use of TRUCKS (turns out he owned the Truck companies.. go figure) … I mean seriously? Trucks? Hmmmmmmm! Eco-living… All naturel… lets use Trucks with all their carbon emissions…Genius idea – NOT ! ! Makes no sense. Fortunately for Costa Rica and for you I am not about to take on the political arena but it does make one think and THINKING is always a good thing. :))
The drive is beautiful, the scenery was filled with rich vegetation and RAIN! 2hrs later We stop of at Casa Turire, (house of fire) a charming Sugar Cane Plantation Hacienda built over 25 years ago. The food, once again, was excellent and full of flavor and I once again find myself falling into a FOOD COMA!
ONWARD… 1hr later we have finally arrived at Santa Marta where we are to meet our 4th *Compadre* Rob, all the way from Holland, via a 7 day excursion in Panama by non-other than yours truly, Costa Rican/Panama Trails…. We abandon our handy-dandy tour bus and climb aboard a 4×4 Jeep and begin the perilous “BUMPY/BOMPY” road deep into…. (dramatic music)…. ZEE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST…funnily enough, in the rain!. On route our “Fearless Leader” tells me that once we reach our destination there will be a gondola to take us across the river? A Gondola? In the Jungle? WHA? HUH? QUE?… Pffffffffffffffft! For crying out LOUD!! Of course… the pictures below speak for themselves. AWESOME!.. 2 at a time now… women and children first… or if you don’t have children, then luggage first!
The above is supposed to be a video of our luggage crossing the river – but I don’t think its working properly – I have to look into this and I will get back to you shortly!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen… Welcome to Pacuare Lodge
Once we were all safely on the other side of the river and on terra-ferma (in the rain) we were met by Wilman (the GM) who escorted us to our rooms… Tonight I will be sharing with lovely Karen, I suddenly went into panic mode and had a minor internal meltdown, YIKES! I am sharing a room!!!!! So here is where I get personal, you see I suffer from “Sleep Apnea”… OK OK OK so I snore, LOUDLY according to my better half…BREATHE!! All will be OK, for I am armed with 50 ear plugs. Aye Aye Aye… suddenly my panic subsides as I open the doors to our Suite… Ladies and Gentlemen may I present to you the Suite Linda Vista (Pretty View Suite) called MORPHA (butterfly).
WOW WOW WOWZER! The most amazing suite EVERRRRRRRR! Over 1000 sq ft, river views, ENORMOUS bedroom and an equally HUMUNGOUS bathroom, private deck with… Sweeeeeeeet infinity pool and hammock… WOW!
(Youknowwhoyouare.com – You will LOVE this! – it reminded me of a lovely hotel in Mexico… but that is another story)
I looked at Karen and said.. “My new found friend, the bed is yours, I will settle on the single day bed, I want to ensure you are most comfortable as unfortunately you are NOT going to sleep tonight so I apologize now in advance…” We laughed and made light of my comment, but I was secretly DYING inside! Please God, let me not snore for once!!! Please hear my prayers!
We all meet at the hotel’s restaurant and lounge, which is a 2 story open air building right on the river’s edge. I forgot to mention that the hotel has NO electricity in the rooms, AT ALL! so at night your room is lit by candlelight, only the open air office next to the public space has power… and WIFI.
Dinner was delicious, we were very well taken care of and one thing that struck me is that Max (our waiter) not only did he know our names prior to our arrival at dinner (a very good attention to detail) but he was also going to be our “wilderness guide” for the next 48 hours. We all retired for the night!! U-OH!
As Karen and I entered our IN-CRE-DIBLE Candle Lit Suite, there was this LOUD frog like noise every 2 minutes that literally made the room shake, I smiled a smile of HUGE relief! Between our lovely frog, the sound of the river and the HEAVY rainfall (sorry not sure if I mentioned it was raining) my prayers had been answered… THERE IS A GOD! There was no-way, no-how that Karen was going to hear a *peep* out of me with all this nature racket going on!!!! Sweet Jesus, God in Heaven! THANK YOU!!!
GOOD NIGHT and AAAAAAAAMEN!
